D.A.R.E.
The Gadsden Police Department`s D.A.R.E. program was implemented into the Gadsden City School System in the 1990 school year. It is designed to give kids information on the dangers of drug, alcohol, and tobacco use. It also teaches them resistance techniques that they can use when pressured by peers to use these potentially dangerous drugs. We show them ways to calm their feelings when they get frustrated, or upset without resorting to violence.
Parents should keep in mind that the D.A.R.E. program is not designed to replace the good parenting that you do with your children. But to reinforce / support that in which you teach them on a daily basis. Keep up the good work. Together we can watch our children grow up healthy and be successful in life.
Message to children........
The D.A.R.E. program has been in the Gadsden City School System since 1990. Since then, thousands of students have gone through and graduated from the program. As most of you know, in D.A.R.E., we give you information concerning the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. We teach you the dangerous affects they can have on people. But most importantly we teach you the ways to resist the pressures to use these drugs. Remember the word "Consequences" meaning the results of something you do or choose not to do. Any time you use drugs the consequences will be bad, and any time and any time you resist the use of or involvement of drugs the consequences will be good (positive).
D.A.R.E. Drug Abuse Resistance Education
Remember the Resistance Techniques:
- Say "No Thanks"
- Give a reason or excuse
- Broken record
- Walk away
- Change the subject
- Avoid the situation
- Cold shoulder
- Strength in numbers
Our D.A.R.E. officers look forward to seeing the students they have taught in the program over the years become our future teachers, police officers, lawyers, doctors, congressmen, vice presidents, or even President of the United States. All this can be accomplished as long as you study hard, stay in school, and remember that it`s all up to you.
